The Classroom

Join the crew in the first exploratory immersion learning experience celebrating the International Year of the Reef plying the cerulean blue waters of the British Virgin Islands. This archipelago forms the boundary between the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates. Above the water stand volcanic island peaks, bathed in tropical sun and caressed by warm trade winds. Easily accessible beneath the surface is another world of exotic sea life, spectacular underwater formations and the occasional shipwreck. Watch the North Star and the Southern Cross share the heavens in a tug of war with the Milky Way. Breathe the scent of frangipani lingering on salt air wafting across the sea as frigate birds soar overhead.

This week long, content rich, educational adventure will focus on challenges facing the coral reef ecosystem as well as involve geology, oceanography, marine ecology, weather patterns, astronomy, geospatial navigation, chemistry and even Bernulian physics. Several islands will be visited. For accommodations we will charter a 50-plus foot sailboat and use it as our traveling base to follow in the wake of intrepid explorers, infamous pyrates, and ne’er-do-well sea gypsies. Previous sailing experience is very helpful, but not necessary. A valid passport is required. Engage and explore during the day, then spend nights at anchor under the tropical moon. Evenings offer ample opportunity for shore side entertainment.

Space is limited, amenities Spartan and privacy is, well, we will know each other very well by the end of our journey. Each cabin has a private toilet and shower compartment, minimal storage and a queen sized bunk, plenty big enough for two. Cost per cabin is $2,304. This includes the expense of the charter, dockage and mooring fees, taxes, national park fees, and daily continental breakfast. Additional costs would include other meals and snacks which can either be prepared aboard or enjoyed ashore at many fine establishments. Travel arrangements to the Caribbean, duty free shopping and adult themed beverages would also be at additional expense.
